The International Film Festival of Catalonia comes back, from 6th to 15th of October, to the Catalan locality of Sitges with a new range of high quality proposals that would pass the test of the most demanding cinema lovers. Once again, the number one fantasy film festival in the world will attract the most important productions of this sector.
The Mexican director Guillermo del Toro will have the honour of opening the 39th edition with El Laberinto del Fauno. Besides, the Festival will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Blue Velvet of David Lynch.
Apart from tributes, the Festival is structured in different lines depending on the genre and nationality of the films. Thus, the Fantastic Official
one is the first in importance and is marked by several lines of contents. The European film, The Science of Sleep, by Michel Gondry; the oriental The Host, by Bon Joon-hogong; Princess, by Anders Morgentahler, in the animation section; national projections, with the quality of Los Abandonados, by Nacho Cerdá; or Cigarrete Burns, by John Carpenter in the fantasy genre for TV are some of the titles which will take part of the competition for getting a privileged position in the celebration.
Oficial Noves Visions
, a space dedicated to the most innovative and transgressive proposals on the movie scene, will present Avida, by Benoît Delépine, among others. On the other hand, Orient Express
has been created with the aim of showing new Asian genre. On this occasion Election II by Johnnie To is just an example.
will review again the best classic films in European cinema, as Lancelot du Lac, by Robert Bresson; or Parisal, by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg.
The most recent productions of the animation cinema will be present in Anima ´ t
, space which will be dedicating a retrospective to classic Czech and Slovakian animation.
Seven auteur films will be chosen by well-known critics to take part of the Seven Chances
section, whereas Brigadoon
will celebrate the 40 anniversary of Star Trek and will pay homage to Bela Lugosi.
The Catalan audio-visual production, as a host, has its own section, Catalan Focus
. Besides students of the Catalan cinema school will show their works in Nova Auditoria
Spaces of the Festival
The places which have been chosen for projecting the movies are the Hotel Meliá of Sitges, the modern Auditori, the emblematic cinema of El Retiro, the polyvalent Cine Prado and, finally, the neoclassical building Miramar. All of them are equipped with the last technologies in order to respect the high quality of the works shown.
How to arrive
Sitges has an excellent access with the centre of Barcelona. Thus, there are regular suburban trains of Renfe company that pass through the main stations of Barcelona (Plaza Catalunya or Sants Estació, among others). The journey time is 30 minutes approximately.
