This was actually booked as a Christmas present for my parents but I ended up joining them in the end.
My initial reservations re. it being a 'gay' hotel and their website being overtly gay were unnecessary.
The hotel is in a fantastic location with las Ramblas and Passeig de Gracia just 10 mins walk away.
The building itself is beautiful with two columns of stunning windows which form part of the more expensive rooms. The lobby is very cool with a trendy bar and restaurant/chill out area and adjoining clothing shop.
The staff in every quarter were over-helpful and friendly to me and my parents.
The rooms were superb sized with large double bed, cool minimal wardrobes/lights and table/chair.
They operate a good pay-per-film TV service which also acts as a CD player but also have about 15 channels free. There was a CD player and safe etc.
The bathrooms had a fab power shower in and the whole place smelt amazing. You can actually buy the candles they burn everywhere in the lobby.
A nice touch is whilst there is no bar, there is free chilled bottles of water in every floors corridor. There is also a 'media' level with free internet access etc. on 2 pc's.
The piece de resistance is the top floor which is an open, decked, beautiful roof terrace. There is a 'Sky Bar' open from May-Sept but the pool snad hot tub are open all year - even in March the sun was hot and people were using the hot tub and loungers.
The gym and sauna were also clean and spacious.
Absolutely loved this hotel and would definitely advise anyone who is travelling to Spain to give it a go.

Excellent hotel: gay-oriented but straight-friendly, as their handsome website asserts in a nice challenge to good old-fashioned heteronormativity. And friendly it is: cool rooms, friendly helpful staff, nice city breakfast, great location in the heart of the Eixample, excellent food nearby. Lovely comfortable rooms, stayed in February so hard to know how much it heats up (literally and otherwise) in the summer. Very relaxed feel - nice for homosexualists and for straights with sense as well. 15mins walk to the Barri Gotic, Raval etc. Totally unlike the tatty mess that is sometimes directed towards gay tourists in other countries and other places.

Simply the best "gay" hotel I have ever stayed in. We stayed in one of the superior rooms which was spacious, spotlessly clean, had an adorable balcony, jacuzzi bath, and unbelievably comfortable king bed.
The overall design is very cool and trendy. The roof top pool/gym/spa area is wonderful. Unfortunately the Sky Bar was closed in March as it was still rather chilly at night.
The staff are very friendly and full of helpful tips on where to go, what to see, and how to get there. I highly recommend the metro system. It is fairly cheap, very clean and very easy for tourists to use.
I shall certainly be returning to this wonderful city and be staying at the Axel.

We spent almost a week there before new year, 2005 and that was one of the best hotel experience we ever had in Europe. Its clean, lovely, cozy, modern design, freindly staff, kind clientele and very stlyish all together. It completely fits the need of an urban traveller.
The hotel has just perfectly sized pool on the roof, its a shame its not heated, and has a jacuzzi which is heated (!), sauna and steam room.
Its a great place to chill out after a long day spent in Barcelona, and also really close to some funky bars, and clubs so it is just the perfect location. Close to the underground station and not far from the La Ramblas. We had dinner once in the restaurant, and it was okay, they have a sort of short menu, and it is a bit fusion(ish) trying to be upmarket(ish) and even tough not as yummie as the dinner in La Paradeta in Born (the best seafood on the world) but decent, and nicely served.
Barcelona is a great place to visit, and Axel hotel is the best choice to stay! It is not the cheapest tough, but treat yourself with a couple of days here, it worths it! |
